Jacques Wei

The new Chinese designer you need to know, now

For the past three years during Shanghai Fashion Week, we’ve been honoured to partner with creative incubator Labelhood to launch a scholarship project discovering and supporting emerging talents in China. Shanghai Fashion Week 2021 has officially opened at Xintiandi, Shanghai, and the recipient of our scholarship this year, Jacques Wei, will be showcasing his collection on April 10th.

Allow us to take you into the world of Jacques Wei for a glimpse of his creative process.

Jacques Wei’s Autumn-Winter 2021 collection depicts the contradictions of order, alongside the wild, free love of the 1970s. Lavish cocktail parties, and the indulgence of underground club culture defines the bourgeois girl of Wei’s Belle Époque; the girl who dresses willfully and recklessly, marking the bold transitional fashion of the era. Elements of music, art, and furniture from half a century ago were put together to create mismatched collisions; that of the elegant and the wild, of the orderly and the romantic.

Taking inspiration from the art deco revival of the 70s, Wei uses shades of beige, and contrasting black and white alongside specks of blue and gold for his colour palette. Textiles with wood grain textures, animal prints, and greyhound patterns were used repeatedly, and paired with leather and suede. Intricate flower details find themselves entangled in delicate silk-satin, while luminous metallic fabrics, woven techniques, and fine lace cleverly adorn the tailored silhouettes. Macramé, tassel-decorated hems, and exquisite gold embroidery all serve to add to the opulent mood.

The collection is now available at Lane Crawford Shanghai Times Square, Lane Crawford Seasons Place Beijing and Lane Crawford Chengdu IFS. The Autumn Winter collection will be landing soon. Stay tuned.
