EYEWEAR FOR EVERY FACE SHAPE

Meet your match

Words by Bridget Barnett

While pulling off a pair of specs has a lot more to do with confidence and attitude than anything else, when it comes to navigating a sea of choices, it helps to start face first. Read on for an easy guide to finding your perfect fit.

ROUND FACE

To balance out a round face – widest across the cheeks – opt for square or angular frames. Cat eye styles work particularly well, adding definition and structure. As for the least flattering? Anything circular, especially small frames, which will emphasise roundness.

HEART-SHAPED FACE

A heart-shaped face is widest at your forehead and narrowest at the jawline. If this sounds like you, you’ll want something that mimics your natural dimensions. Wayfarers, cat eyes and aviators, all of which are tapered at the bottom, are perfect starting points.

SQUARE FACE

Those with a square face have cheekbones, foreheads and jawlines that are all similar in width. You’re best off choosing something with curved edges, like round glasses or even frameless styles – just be sure to avoid anything boxy or overly angular.

OVAL FACE

An oval face shape – which is longer than it is wide – suits the most eyewear styles. And while you’ve pretty much got your pick of the bunch, it’s important not to distract from your natural balance. Don’t let oversized become supersized!
